The 2009 or Better Collection

(Harlem 65, New Day, & 25 To Life)

by Christopher K.P. Brown

Price: $12.95

Some call it a trinity but he says it's a representation of the past, the present, and the future. Harlem 65 tells the story of the African in America, the story of Black people in this nation. Harlem 65 represents our history, the past. New Day tells the story of now as it relates to poetry and spoken word, the present state of poetry. 25 To life tells the story of the future, the goals and aspirations of the poet, Christopher K.P. Brown - his goals not only career wise but also as a Black man who wishes to build a strong family in America.  The 2009 or Better Collection includes over 70 poems by the young poet, Christopher K.P. Brown. The collection includes the chapbooks Harlem 65, New Day, & 25 To Life all for the low price of $12.95, a bargain for anyone who enjoys quality art.

Harlem 65

The first in a series of chapbooks by Christopher K.P. Brown, Harlem 65 is a set of poems directly influenced by the life and work of the great African American leader, Malcolm X. These twenty-five poems take a look at issues in the Black community that are rarely addressed in poetry from poems that encourage Black youth to learn about investing, to poems that address hazing in African American sororities and fraternities, to how some of our cultural practices such as soul food actually contribute to poverty and health problems within the Black community.

New Day

The second installment in a three part chapbook series, New Day is a collection of new poems by Christopher K.P. Brown. The poems in New Day address what steps must be taken in order for poetry and spoken word to advance as an industry. These twenty-five poems take an in-depth look into the world of modern day poetry and spoken word from what role poets must play in the community to issues concerning the financial stability of poets in our modern day society.  While those familiar with spoken word have waited on some type of spoken word movement for years there haven’t been any clear steps taken to help produce this change. Spoken word fails to reach the masses because of a lack of structure, a lack of organization. Therefore, along with new poetry, Christopher K.P. Brown also presents a set of steps that must be taken in order for poetry and spoken word to reach it’s goal of being a respected art form.

25 To Life

The final volume of a three part chapbook series by Christopher K.P. Brown, 25 To Life is a collection of 25 poems that center around America’s prison system.  The title, 25 To Life, also speaks to the fact that Brown, now at the age of 25, has chosen to dedicate his life to his poetry which is why this chapbook is being released on the poet’s 25th birthday, July 6, 2009.

While 25 To Life is the final chapter in Brown’s 2009 chapbook series, this collection not only marks the completion of a trilogy but it also marks the beginning of Christopher K.P. Brown’s career as a full time poet. 25 To Life.
