Harlem 65

The first in a series of chapbooks by Christopher K.P. Brown, Harlem 65 is a set of poems directly influenced by the life and work of the great African American leader, Malcolm X. These twenty-five poems take a look at issues in the Black community that are rarely addressed in poetry from poems that encourage Black youth to learn about investing, to poems that address hazing in African American sororities and fraternities, to how some of our cultural practices such as soul food actually contribute to poverty and health problems within the Black community.

Harlem 65 captures the need for education, the need for identity, and the need for self-sufficiency that was once promoted in the speeches and actions of Malcolm X. It captures the legacy of a people who were forced to the Americas through slavery only to push through these struggles, come out survivors, and even take leadership roles in a nation that once considered African Americans to be animalistic beings.

Released just days after the inauguration of President Barack Obama yet just a few days before Black History Month 2009, Harlem 65 links the African American past with the African American future.
