New Day
With poems like Say Hello, Brown discusses the need for poets to take an active role in their communities, the need to communicate with the people that poetry often addresses. This is even more evident in the Still Tippin (Reprise) where Brown states “I couldn’t care less about a def poet signed to a label, what’s a def poet when you can’t afford cable”. Though much of the chapbook focuses on what changes should be made in poetry, Brown continues to pick up where his last chapbook, Harlem 65, left off by writing on the issues most important in our society. Cross Generational Sex focuses on how fast AIDS is spreading amongst teenage girls in East Africa and how this relates to teenage girls in the African-American community. For Jaheem focuses on the eleven year old in Atlanta, Georgia who recently killed himself after being taunted by fellow classmates who called him “gay”.
Always looking to advance the world of spoken word and reach a crowd that doesn’t necessarily appeal to poetry, Christopher K.P. Brown clearly states his goals for the craft in his new chapbook. More than ever, Brown uses his skill to clearly state where poetry is going and how it’s gong to get there. With this chapbook, Christopher K.P. Brown introduces us to a new day for poetry.
