Originally released in September of 2007, POETRY: a hip hop album is the fourth spoken word album by poet Christopher K.P. Brown. Thanks to up and coming producer, Okenna Oparah, this poetry album distinguishes itself from other poetry releases by providing quality music that matches and also enhances the quality of the poetry being delivered on the album. Very few poetry albums, if any, are able to flawlessly blend hip hop beats with socially conscious poetry in a manner in which it’s done on POETRY: a hip hop album.

The first half of POETRY: a hip hop album tackles issues concerning Black male identity. Tracks like Rhyme Scheme, Losing Isaiah, and (WE)alth Part 2 specifically address the paths that many Black males take and why these paths are taken. Instead of bashing young Black males who choose the common paths of hip hop, sports, or drugs, the first half of the album explains why these are common paths for young Black males. he second half of POETRY: a hip hop album is a dedication to Black women. S.G.A. is a poem dedicated to Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, and Maya Angelou. On A Poem 4 My Mother the poet Christopher K.P. Brown gets personal and gives the listener a glimpse into the relationship he shares with his mother. The most moving track on the album is Mahagony, a six minute poem that uses a narrative format to portray the issues that many young Black women face in today’s society.
Recorded over a span of two years, POETRY: a hip hop album is one of the most important spoken word albums ever released. The quality of the poetry and music on the album exceeds that of most poetry releases. POETRY: hip hop album provides a unique blend of poetry and hip hop that can be enjoyed by both fans of hip hop and fans of poetry.
