Old vs. New: The Chronicles of Growth is the first poetry release from spoken word artist Tanesha J. Douglas. The first half of her chapbook (The Birth) consists of poetry dating back to when she first started writing at the young age of seven years old up to her sophomore year in college.  The second half (The Growth) consists of poems Douglas began writing during her senior year of college up to now.

Tanesha Douglas was born October 20, 1987 in Newark, New Jersey.  Raised in a single parent home, at the age of 7 she began to use writing as a way of expressing herself and her emotions. When she was 15, Douglas landed a recording deal with Animocity Records; however, after exploring the industry, she realized that  being a rapper was not her calling. Though she no longer pursued a career in rap music she did continue to write.

In August of 2005, she enrolled at the University of Georgia (Athens) and continued to write and perform locally at campus functions, gaining a support base in the process. However, during her sophomore year of college, Douglas decided to take a hiatus from writing and it wasn’t until November of 2008 that Douglas returned to her craft. Half of the poems included in her new chapbook, Old vs. New: The Chronicles of Growth, were produced during this most recent span of her career as a writer.

Old vs. New: The Chronicles of Growth marks the beginning of what Douglas hopes to be a long lasting career as a poet and spoken word artist. In the first half of the chapbook Douglas shows her roots as a writer dedicated to the page as a beginning poet with poems like One Who Is Me and Spiritual Renewal. The second half of Old vs. New shows the evolution of her skill most notably in her ability to tell the stories of others.  Where many of the poems in The Birth are personal, many of the poems in The Growth prove how Douglas, now, in her writings, is able to relate and speak to a wider audience by reaching outside of herself and into the lives of others to create poetry that touches the reader on a personal level. Most importantly, the sixteen poems included in Old vs. New: The Chronicles of Growth serve as introduction to Tanesha J. Douglas, a poet who continues to evolve and grow on a daily basis.
