Recently, 2 Pens & Lint's own, Henry Duncan, had a chance to ask Adrienne Lyric a few questions concerning her writing style, her other talents, and her new chapbook; Love In All Shades.
Henry Duncan: How would you describe your writing style?
Adrienne Lyric: Intense, Provocative, Thought provoking
HD: Who are your literary influences?
AL: Langston Hughes, June Jordan, Paublo Neruda, Nikki Giovanni, Robert Frost and Shakespeare to name a few; then there's the non traditional poets
HD: Your chapbook, Love In All It’s Shades, includes many different topics. How do all these topics fall under the subject of love?
AL: That's the point, love is abundant, it can't be contained or made to conform to any one formula, it varies. So, each poem falls under the umbrella of love in its own way.
HD: How much are your poems based on personal experience?
AL: All my poems are based on life experiences, not always mine but collective experiences and the thought of endless possibility. Often I start a piece with a topic I'm passionate about, as the piece unravels it is subject to a myriad of influences. HD: Your poems include strategic word placements. Why do you format your poems in this manner?
AL: I'd say reading my chapbook is an experience and I feel like visual intrigue is apart of the experience, that's the right side of my brain working. (laughs)
HD: Your talents expand beyond poetry. What are your other talents.
AL: I'm a singer, songwriter and actor. I sing Jazz, Blues, R & B and a little bit of Funk. I absolutely love performing and writing, a few more of my hearts many passions. I'm currently in the studio recording new original songs and auditioning for shows. I recently finished the play Barn Razing and The Vagina Monologues in N.Y.C.
HD: With these talents where does poetry fit with your overall career goals?
AL: I treat all my creative outlets like my babies and a parent should never favor one baby over the other. I love being able to express myself and share as an artist. As a poet I dedicate alot of time an effort to each piece and I have no intention of ever putting down my pen. I've already started working on my next chapbook and hopefully it will be out by early next year.
