Born in 1967, Jimmy L. Simmons grew up in the small town of Elizabethtown, NC. Raised by his grandparents he was able to live a life of relative ease. As a teenager he started joining in hip hop cyphers with cousins and other family members. His family members would rap while Jimmy chose to use poetry.

As a child Jimmy would visit Washington DC and would grow fond of the city. He eventually made D.C. his home in 1995. Jimmy continued to hone his skills ,performing at weddings and other family functions. He would make birthday cards and write obituaries. In 2001 Jimmy married his wife, a native of Washington D.C. and has been happily married for 10 years.

Before now he has never performed for an audience other than his family members. He wasn’t nervous, he just never felt the need to go outside of family for support. With the support of his wife and family, Jimmy has decided release his first collection of poems. Liveation: Still Alive is a collection of the thoughts and experiences that Jimmy had over the course of his life. His favorite topics include God, his family, and the numerous people he meets at his job at Martha’s Table. Liveation: Still Alive will serve as a way for Jimmy to “test the waters” to determine if he wants to make poetry more than just a hobby.
