You Gonna Make Me Say Somethings That I Might Have to Repent for Later By Michael Conner
Michael Conner was born on May 9, 1971 in North Philadelphia. By the age of four, Michael’s father had separated from his mother, resulting in Michael being raised in a single parent household. Michael’s mother who held relied on her Christian faith for strength admonished Michael and his siblings to be resourceful and resilient, rather than resentful.
Even as a child, Michael displayed his gift of expression through singing, drawing cartoons and playing the viola and piano. As a student, he was classmates to many aspiring greats such as Kenny Terry of AzYet and Michael McCary of Boyz II Men. However, it was not until Michael’s homeroom teacher, Mrs. Pickney introduced him to the art of poetry composition that the seed of poetry was planted. Michael’s teacher encouraged Michael to write poetry ‘like a prophet.’
As a high school student at Philadelphia’s Olney High School, Michael decided to combine his love of poetry with rap music; this subsequently opened doors for Michael to work on the ED Box Music Video Show. Michael also produced a music album with partner Bilaly B., performing and promoting the albums through various clubs and venues through Philadelphia. In 1999, Michael presented at his first spoken word venue at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia, PA.
The year 2000 brought hardships that Michael had to face and endure; however, the gift of poetry never left him. In 2007, Michael begin appearing at Art Noir, located at 72nd and Ogontz as well as other spoken word venues. Michael also had the opportunity to appear at the Five Spot, then the host of the Black Lily Showcase.
Although originally from North Philadelphia, Michael currently resides in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He is currently a professional chef, a professional cook and working on his second chapbook. Michael plans to expand his gift of expression through stand-up comedy. In 2012, Michael will be enrolling in college to pursue a career in Social Work and Drug Rehabilitation. Throughout all Michael’s endeavors, Michael is committed to his expression as an author and performance poet. Michael’s inspiration to pursue all of his dreams with reservation: “I can do all things through CHRIST JESUS who strengthens me.”
